It is notable for its confused pervasiveness. Racial segregation is a necessary feature of any honest portrayal of the 1920s, and with the absence of any chance of resolution, it looks set to be a key theme of this season. The question though, is how good? Atlantic City isn’t that big, surely even he cannot sustain his all-things-to-all-men act forever, especially with tensions rocketing skywards. We already know how good he is at this sort of thing. As a means of showing us Nucky’s playing of every side, it feels a little heavy handed. We see him giving two speeches, one to a black congregation, the other to the KKK, to each vowing his support against the other. He does, however, get to work immediately. “You know I’ll take care of it” he assures Chalky, but when even his brother Eli cannot help but pour disdain on the ‘uppity shine’, it may be beyond even his grasp to achieve it. Chalky means war, as do the KKK, and it will take all of Nucky’s skills at politicking to keep them from it. It seems they’re after a certain person who may have cut off the finger of one of their number.Ĭhalky manages to despatch them but only narrowly, and not without significant losses on his side. Investigating the heist now linked to Hans Schroeder, straight-and-narrow Agent Nelson van Alden pays a visit to Nucky, and leaves convinced that the Treasurer is "as corrupt as the day is long." A concerned Nucky sends his brother, Sheriff Elias Thompson, to the hospital to sow the seeds of doubt in the widow Schroeder's mind, then visits the local jail to tell Mickey Ward that he's being replaced by Chalky White in the bootleg-production business. Privy to inside information about a truck shipment leaving town that night, the pair engineers a rogue heist that turns deadly-sending Nucky looking for scapegoats to take the blame. Jimmy, who has higher aspirations, ends up befriending Al Capone, a young Chicago thug in town with boss Arnold Rothstein, who's setting up bootleg deals with Nucky. At a countdown to midnight blast at Babette's Supper Club, he flirts with Margaret Schroeder, a pretty, pregnant wife looking for help getting her abusive husband Hans a job, and assures Jimmy Darmody, a recently returned WWI vet, that his appointment as "Man Friday" to the new Chief Clerk of the Fourth Ward, Paddy Ryan, will lead to bigger things. On the eve of Prohibition, Atlantic City's duplicitous Treasurer, Nucky Thompson, condemns alcohol at a Women's Temperance League meeting, then privately tells his Ward Bosses about the opportunity to make huge profits selling bootleg liquor.
